Permanent Garden Mural at Locust Primary School in Garden City, NY

In May of 2023, Sophie Della Penna was commissioned by Principle Eileen Vota to plan, sketch, and paint a large scale permanent mural on the walls of the main hallway in Locust Primary School. Over the course of one week, Della Penna worked in collaboration with cooperating art teacher Ms. Nicole Leyland as well as several parent volunteers to execute her original vision of a floral mural that pays tribute to the community run flower garden on the grounds of Locust Primary School. Della Penna used acrylic paints to render beloved local flowers such as tulips, lilacs, daffodils, and daisies. The mural also features lovingly detailed depictions of local insects such as honeybees, butterflies, ladybugs, and dragonflies. Since May 2023, Della Penna’s mural remains a permanent work of art in Locust Primary School.
